7 Top Tips for Water Time Safety

Some of the best family memories are made in and around the water– swimming in the pool, jumping waves in the ocean, or hanging out by the local lake. While making fun-filled memories should be top priority, it’s also important to keep water safety top of mind.
Below are some of the American Red Cross’s top safety tips to help guarantee fun and safe water-time fun.

  1. One of the best ways you can protect your family is to make sure they’re comfortable in the water. Enroll children in age-appropriate water orientation and swim classes to help them learn the basics early on.
  2. Never leave a young child unattended near water, even by the bathtub. Make sure your children understand the importance of water safety, and teach them to always ask permission to go near water.
  3. Always use the buddy system while swimming, including public pools or a lifeguarded beach.
  4. Be cautious around natural bodies of water–cold temperatures, currents, and underwater hazards can make these inviting bodies of water unexpectedly dangerous.
  5. Always wear a life jacket when participating in water-based activities (boating, jetskiing, etc), or if you’re not a particularly strong swimmer.
  6. There are many ways to effectively childproof your home pool or hot tub. Install barriers; use safety covers and pool alarms; and keep reaching or throwing equipment, life jackets, and a first aid kit handy.
  7. Be sure to keep toys away from the pool when not in use to avoid children wandering over to this area unsupervised.
