With all the excitement that surrounds the warmer weather promised by Spring, this time of year can be a bit of a tease because of all the rain this season brings with it. Instead of letting the rain get us down, it can actually provide us with an opportunity to enjoy some quality time with the family. Here are some of our favorite ways to enjoy the rainy season with the ones we love.
Water-Themed Movie Marathon
What could be better than snuggling up on the couch with the ones we love on a rainy day? Take advantage of your indoor time and introduce the kids to your favorite water-themed movies and shows. Thanks to innovations in technology, applications such as Netflix, Amazon and On-Demand make it easier than ever before to access hundreds of movies and TV shows with the push of a button. Animated film Finding Nemo, starring the funny duo Albert Brooks and Ellen Degeneres is geared towards little ones but is guaranteed to keep the whole family entertained. Pirate-themed movies like Pirates of the Caribbean, The Goonies and Hook all take place on or near an ocean and are real swashbucklers. Or consider classic films like Singin’ In The Rain and Jaws for great rainy day entertainment.
Family Game Night
Just because the weather outside is a drag, it shouldn’t stop you from having some fun inside. Organize an old school family game night, complete with teams and a healthy competitive spirit. For families who are more creatively inclined, try the at-home version of the old game show, Win, Lose, or Draw. Using just a big sketchpad and markers, teams have to guess a certain word or phrase based on what is being drawn and without using any letters. Or, for families who are great with trivia, you can try Trivial Pursuit Family Edition, which includes questions that both kids and adults can enjoy. Of course, if you have younger children with shorter attention spans, you could also play a game of Go Fish with a deck of playing cards.
Throw An Indoor Beach Party
Not beach weather outside? No problem! Bring the beach inside by taking out your Rio beach chairs and encouraging the whole family to put on their bathing suits. You can help set the mood by putting together a great beachy playlist of music and mixing up some refreshing drinks. If you need some inspiration, try making a Fresh Pineapple Agua Fresca, Fizzy Apricot Coolers or a Frozen Lemon Watermelon Nojito. One of the best ways to get your family to stay engaged on a rainy day is through arts and crafts projects you can make together. You don’t need to make a run to the art supply store either–with a little imagination, you can make some great crafts with items you already have at home. Use Q-tips to make flowers, old toilet paper or paper towel rolls to make bird feeders and paper lunch bags to make a kite. For more crafty ideas for a rainy day, check out our Pinterest board.
